Jeff Canoy, journalist and co-creator of BINI’s docuseries, describes telling the story of the group’s early struggles, pre-debut experiences, and rise to fame as a “labor of love.”
The docuseries, split into three parts, provides an in-depth look at BINI’s journey—from auditions and intense training to their debut and rapid ascent to stardom. Each scene captures the personal reflections of members Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena, along with insights from their team.
Released last September, “BINI Chapter 1: Born to Win” reflects on the group’s formation, highlighting how the ABS-CBN shutdown, strict lockdowns, and the pandemic shaped the members. Set against the backdrop of their “BINIverse” concert, it also reveals the members’ personal struggles, such as Sheena grieving her mother’s passing, Aiah’s battle with anxiety, and Gwen coping with illness during the concert.
The upcoming second chapter, “Here with You,” delves deeper into BINI’s reflections as they experience widespread fame, set to release on Nov. 8.
In an interview with INQUIRER.net prior to the release, co-creator Jeff Canoy shared, “Who they are on TV, on your screens, or phones is exactly who they are in real life. It sounds cliché, but it’s true.” He noted the unique experience of observing BINI up close as a documentarian rather than from a fan’s perspective, adding, “They are genuinely kindhearted and admirable, both inside and outside the industry.”
Canoy, a fan of music documentaries, said ABS-CBN aimed to revive long-form storytelling, which inspired the docuseries. A longtime BINI fan himself—an “OG Bloom”—Canoy felt especially motivated to capture the group’s story authentically. “Everyone who knows me knows I’m a fan,” he said, recalling how he discovered them during the pandemic and supported them as they worked toward their breakthrough.
