Temperatures to be about 1°C higher than average, says Meteorological Department

Thailand’s winter is predicted to be milder this year, with average temperatures about one degree Celsius higher, according to the Meteorological Department.

During the cool season, which began Sunday, daily minimum temperatures in January are expected to reach lows of 16-19°C in the North and Northeast. Overall, temperatures will be around 1°C warmer due to fluctuating weather patterns, the department reported on Tuesday.

The department noted that cooler air has already settled over the North and Northeast, bringing maximum temperatures below 29°C since Oct. 29. This cooler air has gradually spread to the Central Plains and the East.

Winds have shifted to northeastern or easterly directions, and rainfall is continuing to decrease. Under these conditions, Thailand officially entered the cool season on November 3, according to a statement by Sugunyanee Yavinchan, the acting director-general of the department.

Rain is expected in parts of upper Thailand in early November, with more frequent showers, including heavy to very heavy rain, forecast for the South during November and December.

Somkhuan Tonjan, director of the department’s forecasting sub-division, told ThaiPBS Online that this year’s cool season is expected to be warmer than usual, with temperatures about 1°C higher than the average.

He also noted that it is fortunate for Thailand to enter the cool season amid variable weather, given the shift from El Niño to La Niña. The North and Northeast are expected to experience colder weather from December to January, with cold air from China spreading across the country until January.

The expected daily minimum temperatures for January are as follows:

• North: 16-18°C in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae, Lamphun, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, and Phetchabun.
• Northeast: 17-19°C in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani, Maha Sarakham, Buri Ram, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Nakhon Ratchasima.
• Central Plains: 20-22°C in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Pathum Thani, and Nonthaburi.
• East: 22-24°C in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Nayok, and Sa Kaeo.
• Bangkok and surrounding areas: 23-25°C.
